Drvenik Veli is an island situated in middle-Dalmatian archipelago, northwest of the island of Solta, 1 nm from the mainland. Nearest mainland port is in Vinisce. Drvenik Veli is 7.1 nm far from Trogir and 15 nm far from the Split. Size of island Drvenik Veli is 12 kilometers squared. Drvenik Veli administratively belong to the municipality of Trogir.
Climate is Mediterranean. Winds that blow are bora and scirocco. Average year temperature is 18 °C.
The island was first inhabited in the 15th century. First inhabitants were shepherds and nomads, mostly from Trogir hinterland and Drvenik near Makarska, running away from Turks. Island Drvenik was named by village Drvenik near Makarska. In 1848. it was named Drvenik Veli. Now Inhabitants are mostly directed to agriculture, livestock farming and fishing. Drvenik Veli is also known by carobs.
The main settlement on the island is village Drvenik which has a small fery port. In this port you can arrive with ferry from Trogir and Seget Donji. In Trogir the ferry for Drvenik Veli goes from waterfront (Riva). If you want to go to Drvenik Veli with your car than you must go from Seget Donji which is only 1 kilometer from Trogir. In Drvenik you can find grocery store, restaurants, pizzerias and taverns.
Drvenik Veli is an island of peace, untouched nature, clean sea and beautiful beaches. The coast is rugged and consists of many bays with sandy and pebbly beaches. The most beautiful is beach Krknjasi, located on the south-east coast of this island. From the outside, the bay is protected with two islands, big and small Krknjas. During the summer this beach is full of boats that are anchored in front of the beach. There is one nice restaurant(link na komunu) placed few meters from the beach which offers you an excellent selection of fresh seafood and authentic Dalmatian dishes. This natural beauty you can visit by renting a boat in Trogir or Okrug (referenca na rentu) or you can go with organized excursions (referenca na excursions). If you don’t prefer this way of traveling you can arrive with ferry which will drive you to the main village Drvenik and than you can come to Krknjasi by foot. It will take about 30 minutes.
