Split is city which lives in slow motion rhythm, and somebody observing from the side could come to conclusion that it is a holiday everyday in Split. Very soon you would catch the rhytm that is ruling the town. City's squares, caffe bars and city promenade called Riva, which is full of people in winter as well as in the summer. As in most cities on the coast, it is tradition to drink coffie and chat with friends, it is considered to be some kind of ritual in Dalmatia. Mediterannien climate gives Split summer refreshing moments through soft breez and wind maestral, while city walls and winter sun protect from cold days. Today Split is an urban centre of this region and attractive destination for numerous tourists. UNESCO proclaimed the value of the old city centre by putting it on its list of world heritage. Split is situated in the middle of Dalmatia and it represents capital centre of the region in transportation, economics and in culture. With highway and rail it is connected with Zagreb, capital city, while it is, with all the islands in its region connected with numerous ferries and boats. There is also everyday ferry-line Split-Ancona and air-lines with all important destinations in Europe. Split is centre of education in Dalmatia as well. Main characteristics of Split are Diocletians palace, Riva and hill Marjan. About 250 000 people inhabit Split.

History
The first inhabitant and also its founder was Diokletian, the Roman emperor,who in year 293.after Christ, has built luxurious emperor's villa,about 30 000 squer meters, where he moved, after retiring from thron of Roman imperator. Roman imperator Diokletian, with original name Diokles (ruled from 284. to 305.) comes from poor family. He was well known reformator of Roman empire. Among other things, he introduced tetrahy, simultenious ruling of 4 rulers. He was the prohibitor of Christans and he considered himself a god. Interesting information is that he is the only emperor who retired from the thron without force. Diokletian's palace is the best preserved late ancient palace in the world. Eastern and western walls are 261 meters long,southern 181m and northern 175m long. In the northern part of the palace were rooms of army and servants,while in the south part were emperors chambers. Water for drinking was brought with aqueduct, directly from spring of river Jadro in Solin. In year 480.,the last Roman emperor was poisoned, Julius Nepotus. After that event,one street has its name. Today of the complex of palace,are preserved walls, four doors (Golden-Porta Aurea, Silver-Porta Argentea, Steel-Porta Ferrea and Brass-Porta Aenea),emperors mausoleum (today it is st.Duje's cathedral), corner towers, Jupiter's temple or Temple of all Gods, central square-Peristil, and south of Peristil, Vestibul. More significant settlement started in 7th century, first within the walls, and later outside the walls. After Croats inhabited area,Split bacame roman town. Long time Split and area around it was part of Bizantine Dalmatia.But with passing on to christianity, bizantine power was slackening,while at the end,Croatian kings and rulers took over.After that emperors mauseloeum became church of st.Duje,patron of the city.
Split has many restaurants and tavernas in which you can enjoy in domestric specialties, and especially in the mid city center you can experience homely atmosphere. There are numerous beaches in city and nearby places. Very popular are BaŔvice, sandy beach, almost in the center of the city of Split. Cultural and party life is also spectacular, especially in the summer, when Split with its squares,yards and other attractive spots, disguise in a big stage under the sky. In Split there are several theatres, among wich, the most popular is Croatian Public Thetre, built in 1893, and which organizes festivals Split summer and Marulic days. Split has theatre for Youth and chilidren's theatre. There are plenty of night clubs and caffe bars where you can experience good time with different types of music. The most popular fun complex is Bacvice and night clubs in Spinut.
Split was always city of sports. After mediteranniean games, which were held in Split in 1979, and by building sporting infrastructure,city goes through sporting boom and in 1990 Europian championship in athletics was also held in Split. Split offers opportunity of engaging in almost any kind of spotring activity, while its mild climate is very appropriate for open air sports. You can practice all sporting activities on land as well as in water, from soccer, basketball and tennis, and also hiking and fishing, water skiing and rowing. Definietly you should visit park-forrest Marjan, on which people from Split are very proud.Those 'lungs of the city' offer you numerous walking tracks, belvederes, running tracks, play grounds and zoo garden. From its top you have an amazing view of Split.
