Natural beauty of Montenegro

21.03.2025. | Natural Beauties
Skadar Lake is located on the border between Montenegro and Albania. It represents the largest lake in the Balkans, covering an area of 370 km².
Of this, 222 km² belongs to Montenegro, and 148 km² to Albania. The national park covers an area of 40,000 hectares.

History
Lake Skadar National Park was declared in 1983. It received the IBA status, meaning an area of international importance for bird habitation, in 1989. Since 1995, it has been listed on the Ramsar list - the World List of Wetlands of International Importance. The park also includes special nature reserves: Manastirska Tapija, Pančeva oka, and Crni žar.

Nature
Lake Skadar is a national park dominated by aquatic and marsh ecosystems. It was formed geologically through tectonic phenomena, where water masses created an area equally marvelous for both plant and animal life. The plant life is diverse, both in the lake itself and in its surrounding areas, and in the summer months, fields of water lilies and water walnuts can stretch for kilometers. The northern marshy shore, approximately 20,000 hectares, offers ideal conditions for the development of wildlife, especially for birds. Thanks to its preserved ecosystem, Lake Skadar is a "bird paradise" for 280 species of birds. The symbol of Lake Skadar is the Dalmatian pelican, locally called "panac," a phenomenon in this part of Europe. The lake is home to 48 species of fish, with the most numerous and significant being: bleak, carp, crucian carp, loach, bream, perch, eel, sunfish, and goby. The lake, with its wide zone of aquatic vegetation, floodplain meadows, and areas along streams and moist forest zones, provides an ideal habitat for many amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. A typical aquatic representative is the otter.

Tourism
Lake Skadar and its coastline offer 9 hiking trails and 2 educational trails. Additionally, there are 5 cycling trails and 2 mountain biking trails. The trails are marked and labeled, allowing visitors to use them independently. A unique experience is cruising on Lake Skadar. Hidden beaches and swimming in the lake are an integral part of this adventure during the summer months. The tourist offer also includes rides on traditional wooden boats – "čunovi." Sport fishing is a major attraction on the largest lake in the Balkans. For birdwatching enthusiasts, the lake offers opportunities to observe birds from a boat or from platforms. The best period for birdwatching is in winter or autumn, as large flocks of migratory birds pass over Lake Skadar during these seasons.
