Prijedor has a long and complex history shaped by its strategic location in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric and Roman times, while the town itself developed more significantly during the Ottoman period in the 16th century as a regional trading and administrative center. Under Austro-Hungarian rule in the late 19th century, Prijedor experienced modernization, industrial growth, and the expansion of railways and mining activities.

During the 20th century, the town became an important industrial center in former Yugoslavia, particularly known for agriculture, timber, and the nearby iron ore mines of Ljubija. However, Prijedor is also known for the tragic events of the Bosnian War (1992–1995), when the area witnessed ethnic violence, mass displacement, and the operation of detention camps such as Omarska, Keraterm, and Trnopolje. Since the end of the war, the town has gradually rebuilt its economy and infrastructure while continuing efforts toward reconciliation and remembrance.
